Nov 6th: Where Would We Be Without Alex Salmond?

There's a story in today's Scotsman about how Alex Salmond was involved in a near accident in Dubai as his flight came down to land. It's got me wondering what would happen if the unthinkable had happened, and this had ended in tragedy? And more to the point, where would the campaign for Scottish independence be without Alex Salmond?
The Scottish government? The SNP? The Independence Referendum? They have all become so reliant on the personality and ability of Alex Salmond that it's more than worrying. I dont see many individuals on the front bench of the SNP at Holyrood who could step into Alex Salmond's shoes.
Until a genuine grassroots movement for independence is built outside the ranks of the SNP and the Scottish government - although obviously involving SNP activists and supporters - we're in a very vulnerable position. On this subject, there's a good article here on YouScotland that's worth thinking about.

You're right there Kevin. After all, look at the state the SSP got into when they relied so much on, and then lost, their figure head.
I often wonder what tricks the British State may get up to should the independance movement gain a real momentum, we might find out if Mr Salmond plays his cards right.

No fan of personality politics here either. Plus, as a libertarian Atheist Socialist,I'm watching the new Scottish gov with interest. I am no longer a member of any political party, and actually voted SNP for the 1st time in my life in May. This was after hearing the impressive Alex Salmond speak in Aberdeen, at the North East launch of the Independence Convention. What a positive case for Scottish freedom he made. Personally speaking, one of the more endearing facets of Salmond/SNP, is their total committment to an inclusive Scotland. This is indeed most refreshing, after some of the rather surprising anti-Englishness I've recently had the misfortune to encounter.
Indeed, there will continue to be many detractors from the noble cause of Scottish freedom. I for one hope to keep my eye on the ball,as it were.

From what I see from over here, he really is the heart and soul of your independence movement. Perish the thought of anything befalling him!

Kev,
I think, Alex Salmond. Is on, political par, With India's, Gandhi.
I hear! Scottish Brit-unionists. have been plotting, to assassinate, Alex Salmond. In the run-up. To the Scottish, general election. And know doubt. Still are!
Though, it will now. Be more difficult. As, Scottish First Ministers. Have state body guards. To help, thwart, Such acts of evil.
Of course! MI5 could, set it up, also.
