Oct 23rd: Another Banksy Swept Away By English Jobsworths
Tower Hamlets Council are the latest cultural Luddites to destroy a work of street grafitti by Banksy. They follow in the footsteps of such Grade A jobsworths as the ones who painted over Banksy artworks in Brighton (the two polis kissing), Transport For London (the Pulp Fiction piece) and (don't laugh) the owners of the White Cube art gallery in London (the dusty maid picture above).
We shouldn't be too surprised. Whereas Scottish culture traces its historical roots back to a philosophy of "common sense", England has always been a culture dominated by "sticking to the rulebook". (It goes back to the Norman Conquest).
We Scots shouldn't feel too superior. Like all the other unwanted forms of cultural colonisation that have crept over the border, rulebook jobsworths are everywhere in Scotland now. Which is why I'm pretty sure Edinburgh Council would have done much the same to any Banksys on "their" property.

Fucking pinheads, painting over the work. Visited a mate & his wife last April in Brighton & happened to see the coppers snogging on the way back to the train station. Pure quality -- tragic how fucking ephemeral it all is....

Not too bothered to be frank; and re Michael Greenwell's comment, Banksy's "art" is about as revolutionary as the Tory Party Conference. See also D. Hirst's fag butts that rich idiots like Serota and Saatchi pay big money for.

I do like Banksy, but have no idea why the hell the nationality of those destroying it has any relevance whatsoever!
As I say, I do like Banksy's stuff, certainly much better than that stupid fucking crack in the Tate Modern at the moment!

Reidski - two reasons: one it happened in England. The other: its an integral component of the English mindset and has been for 1000 years.
Inflexibly sticking to "the rules" and disregarding common sense is one of England's major cultural contributions to the world, via empire. Its a cultural legacy of the Norman Conquest.
Maybe one day Celtic common sense will conquer...
